How Baseline Testing Can Help You Plan Ahead

May 15
As a parent, one of the trickiest things about guiding your child through their 11 Plus journey is being able to realistically assess their chances of passing the test.

Will they sail through it, is there still a mountain to climb, or is a grammar school place perhaps not the right fit for them after all?

If your child is clearly an academic high-flyer, you have every right to feel confident. But for many parents, especially those whose children are in schools where reports come home with no real measurable feedback, it can be tough to know what “clever enough to pass the 11 Plus test” actually looks like.
It doesn’t help that 11 Plus tests include subjects that aren’t taught in school, like verbal and non-verbal reasoning, added to which you have no real way of knowing how well your child will perform under test conditions, or how much tutoring the other children sitting the same tests may have had, raising the bar for everyone else.

That’s where baseline testing comes in.

🎯 What is a Baseline Test?

A baseline test is a short, realistic 11 Plus test that gives you a snapshot of where your child is right now.

At Club 11 Plus, we offer baseline tests in:

• Maths
• English
• Verbal Reasoning
• Non-Verbal Reasoning

Each test takes 10 minutes. Your child gets just one chance to answer each question, and the clock runs out at the 10-minute mark, whether they’ve finished or not, to simulate the real test.

🧭 What the Results Do and Don’t Tell You

Let’s be clear: a baseline test is absolutely not a pass/fail judgement - it’s a starting point.

Your child’s score will, of course, be hugely influenced by how far they are from the real test date. If they’re taking the baseline test two years in advance of their 11 Plus test, it’s highly unlikely they’ve been taught all the necessary maths topics yet in school. In English, they may not yet have practised any trickier comprehensions, or come across the more complex grammar, punctuation and literary terms needed for 11 Plus tests. And for many children, the baseline test may be the first time they’re ever seen verbal or non-verbal reasoning questions, which will undoubtedly look very unfamiliar and confusing to begin with.

So, a low score in a baseline test doesn’t mean that your child is incapable of passing the 11 Plus - far from it! At Club 11 Plus, we often see children score below 25% in their first baseline attempt, and still go on to sail through the "real thing", with the help and support of the Club 11 Plus tuition programme.

🌱 Why It’s Still Worth Doing

A baseline test helps you:

• Identify strengths and weaker areas.

• Make a realistic plan based on the time available.

• Understand the style and pressure of the real exam.

It can also ease your stress as a parent - there’s a world of difference between thinking, "I have no idea if they’re even in with a chance…” and, "Now I know what we’re aiming for.

And that’s really what it’s about - aiming! At Club 11 Plus, we use an 80% pass mark in all our quizzes, even though many schools only require 65% to 75%. Why? Because we believe in aiming high, and in giving your child the best possible chance to fulfil their potential and reach their goals.
